There’s nothing more Lowcountry than mossy oak trees and lush garden beds with shades of green as far as the eye can see. The Legare Waring House wedding venue is the epitome of Lowcountry beauty, with a historic home, 80 acres of landscaped gardens, and lots of Charleston magic. It’s the perfect place for a sophisticated wedding with a charming Southern ambiance. And space for your entire guest list.
The Legare Waring House has seen its share of owners throughout its storied history. Believed to be built around 1840, the home was passed down from family member to family member for several generations. Until one, William Legare, left the house to a caretaker who let the property and home fall into disrepair. In the mid-1930s, the home was passed to Legare’s sister, Ferdinanda or “Ferdi.” They initiated a major renovation project that continued for decades.
Ferdi poured life back into the property, planting thousands of azaleas, camellias, and the beautiful Avenue of Oaks. One of the property’s most spectacular features today. So much of the Legare Waring House’s heralded beauty. Including the freshwater lagoons behind the home and over 80 acres of picturesque gardens. The legacy of Ferdi and the love she poured into this beautiful estate.
The Legare Waring House is fairly secluded on its acreage, making any event held there feel totally private. The house is beautifully decorated with antiques and artwork that feel quintessentially old Charleston—preserving the thoughtfulness and attention to detail of Ferdi’s care.
The Legare Waring House is perfect for a couple dreaming of an outdoor wedding, with all the beauty and elegance of traditional Charleston.
Weddings here begin with plenty of preparation in the House’s four Bridal Suites, each with a private bathroom. Each suite is decorated with a vintage elegance that will take you back to a simpler era. One suite in particular with Robin’s egg blue walls and cream-colored drapery floods in natural light. Perfect for elegant getting-ready photos of you buttoning the back of your dress. And attending to any final details surrounded by your closest friends and family.
Your partner and their party will be perfectly comfortable in the Groom’s Quarters, a two-story wing with a dressing room and a private bathroom. There is plenty of comfy furniture, a TV, and a mini fridge just waiting for them to use while winding up for the big day, keeping everyone entertained and relaxed.
The Legare Waring House offers three ceremony locations from which you can choose, each of which accommodates 200 guests.
The Avenue of Oaks is the crown jewel of the property. A large stretch of plush, green lawn framed by magnificent oak trees with twisted branches draped in traditional Southern moss. Anchor the vast stretch of green with an arbor or an archway decorated in your wedding florals or elegant drapery. Or let the spectacular space speak for itself. Framing you and your partner with beautiful trees as you say, “I do.”
The Wedding Oak is their second location. Located in front of a massive, ancient oak tree with reaching, gnarled branches draped in moss. The tree is unusual because it gives the impression of two trees joining together. Forever entwined in the tangle of an embrace. It’s a breathtaking spot for a ceremony and represents the love you and your partner are committing to one another.
Lastly, the Wedding Garden is a more intimate clearing surrounded by more gorgeous oak trees. It showcases Ferdi’s famed azaleas, roses, and camellias seasonally, so be prepared for a little extra voluminous color depending on the wedding date you’ve chosen.
For your cocktail hour, your guests can enjoy mingling in the Legare Waring House and taking in the beautiful architecture and decor. It’s a fun way to pique everyone’s curiosity and showcase some of the classic Charleston history that’s so appealing and romantic.
Your reception will take place on the stone patio in front of the Main House, with plenty of space to accommodate your full guest list. You can opt for an open-air celebration with tables set beneath the stars or strings of romantic bistro lights, or you can tent the space, keeping everyone (and everything) safe from any inclement weather.
The property of the Legare Waring House absolutely shines in wedding photos, and the essence of old Charleston will feature heavily in every picture. Regardless of where your ceremony is held, we’ll wander the Avenue of Oaks for photos that are as grand as they are intimate, with the draping moss and twisting branches serving as a backdrop. Depending on what is seasonally blooming, we can also head to the Wedding Garden to feature the flowers, adding a touch of whimsy and color. And even if you didn’t exchange vows in front of the Wedding Oak, you simply must have a picture standing beside it, representing your steadfast love on the first day of the rest of your lives together.
The property also features several other picturesque features, like two gorgeous picturesque lagoons we can use for waterfront portraits and a wrought iron water fountain. Old brick gate posts are a unique backdrop, too, as is the ornate iron gate that rests between them. We can also head inside to take more intimate indoor photos with the antique furniture, pastel wall colors, and vintage drapery as elegant, stylish settings.
Another huge perk of a Legare Waring House wedding is the ability to choose all of your own vendors!
They do require a licensed planner for your event, which will definitely come in handy. Considering the venue doesn’t provide assistance with setup and breakdown. A great planner will make sure everything looks exactly as it’s supposed to. So you can focus on enjoying every moment as it flies by. Your caterer and bartending service need to be licensed. But beyond that, you have total control over who feeds, serves, and entertains your guests!
The Legare Waring House wedding venue is a lush, gorgeous setting for a wedding that exudes Southern sophistication and Lowcountry charm. So, check out their website for more information on the estate’s history and the spectacular beauty of a Legare Waring House wedding.
